At least 50% more GPs are needed to cope with demands across the country.
This is because GPs workload has substantially increased since the pandemic.
Several practices now require non-urgent patients to wait two weeks or more for an appointment due to doctor shortages.
Dr Brendan O'Shea says more GPs are urgently needed:
He said: "We've been saying for several years that there's a need to increase the number of GPs - and yes - by another 50%.
"There are a couple of factors on the supply side. We are constantly getting more work to do in general practice.
"The care we are requested and required for is getting bigger all the time."
