The connection between alcohol and poor mental health is being highlighted as part of Men's Health Week.

Drinkaware says 60 per cent of men drink as a way to cope with stress and feelings of anxiety and depression.

The organisation, which is funded by the drinks industry and some supermarket retailers, surveyed 1-thousand people about their drinking habits.

The data showed men (59%) were  more likely to drink alone at home than women (49%).

In 2022, the  Drinkaware Barometer found that in most cases, men are less aware of alcohol related harms than women.

One third of men are not aware that alcohol can cause disturbed sleep and headaches.

Only half of men are aware that alcohol can contribute to the risk of foetal disorders compared to three quarters of women.

57% of men were however aware that alcohol can reduce sports performance compared to 49% of women.

The average age of a man having his first drink is at 15.3 years old.

Communications Manager with Mental Health Ireland, Carmen Bryce, says drinking can end up creating more problems in the long run:

'Reaching for alcohol to soothe anxiety might become a viscous circle.'
