The medicinal cannabis treatment will only be available to people with specific health conditions.
Health Minister Simon Harris says the legalisation of cannabis-based medicine is being introduced in Ireland on a five year trial basis.
It will have to be prescribed by a consultant and will just be considered as a last resort if all other treatments fail, while it will only be given to people who have unmanageable spasms associated with MS, nausea and vomiting from chemo, or severe epilepsy.
Minister Harris has insisted that there are no plans to legalise cannabis in Ireland and the punishments for unauthorised supply and possession are not changing.
