The man in his 50's was pronounced dead at the scene in Kilcock yesterday afternoon.
A post-mortem examination will be carried out today on the mans body at Naas General Hospital by State Pathologist Sally Ann Collis.
He is believed to have died violently at an apartment on School Street in the village.
The man who was arrested at the scene and is being detained at a garda station in Kildare under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity of School Street between 3pm and 4pm yesterday and who witnessed anything unusual to contact them.
They are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the vicinity of School Street are asked to pass on the footage to Gardaí.
