A power station in Co. Longford has been temporarily closed after a hot water discharge at the plant.
The EPA says it's investigating the incident, which happened yesterday at the Lough Ree Power Station in Lanesborough.
Concern has been raised over the potential affects on fish and other wildlife in the river.
A statement from the ESB says the facility will remain closed as it looks to change its environmental licence.
This dictates the temperature of the water it pumps into the Shannon.
Sinead O'Brien from Sustainable Water Network says that's a worry.
She feels they're not looking seriously at the impact it has and measures to address them.
Instead, she thinks it's "as if they're trying to get the licensing conditions made a little less onerous to facilitate them to continue".
