Student representatives have broadly welcomed the plans, with Courtney Chambers, Laois/Offaly Regional Officer with the Irish Second-Level Students' Union, telling iRadio they are a step in the right direction:
"A lot of students will benefit hugely from this. It's allowing students to be more practical based and it's catering to more and more types of students. We're not 100 per cent there yet but the announcement has been a huge huge step in the right direction."
However teachers' unions have raised some concerns about the proposals.
Minister Norma Foley says the State Examinations Commission will make sure there won't be significant grade inflation:
"They will moderate the exams and the certification will actually come from the State Examinations Commission so I don't have any fears in that respect.
"This will be worked through in partnership with the NCCA, the SEC and indeed the teaching staff going forward."
