The government should consider putting health warnings on junk food, according to a public health expert.
In a world-first, Ireland passed a law in May making warning labels on alcohol packaging compulsory.
It’s ignited a debate about whether our problems with obesity could be tackled by adopting a similar approach to unhealthy foods.
Dr. Margaret Steele from the School of Public Health at UCC thinks the more information provided, the better:
"There definitely is clear evidence that labeling has an impact."
"It gives people more information and things like traffic light systems, where you'll see the green, red, orange on the different key nutrients, something that people can just glance at and quickly get a sense of."
"I think that's definitely something that the Irish Government needs to be looking at making compulsory."
