The European Space Agency is warning that July could bring the hottest temperatures ever recorded in Europe.

At least 4-thousand people have now left their homes on the Spanish island of La Palma due to an "out of control" wildfire, with 300 firefighters tackling the blaze.

America's West Coast is also expecting temperatures to soar beyond 50 degrees Celsius in the coming days.

Reporter Joan Larkin is at Alicante in Spain where holidaymakers are being urged to take cover from the midday sun.

She adds, "The high temperatures are set to continue for the next fortnight or so with no respite even at night time with temperatures not dropping below around 30 degrees in some areas between midnight and 6am.

Joan Larkin continues, "Thousands of Irish visitors are arriving in Spain every week and they're being advised by health officials here [Spain] not to get complacent about such extremes of heat."

Health officials have given the advice to, "drink lots of water, avoid caffeine and alcohol as they can dehydrate the body and to stay out of the sun from midday to 4pm."
