The Health Research Board says 3 in 4 people here live within walking distance of a pub, while Ireland ranks 3rd highest in the world for the number of pubs per head of population.
HRB research officer Anne Doyle says the proximity to pubs, particularly in deprived areas, is worrying.
'Possible of more concern is that there are substantially more liquor licences in areas of deprivation and that;s important because those in areas of deprivation even though they might drink the same amount as those in affluent areas they are in fact more likely to experience alcohol related harm.'
