Seamus Lawless from Bray, Co. Wicklow reached the peak of the world's highest mountain this morning.

The 39-year-old travelled to Nepal last month to do the climb as a fundraiser for the children's charity Barretstown.

He's part of an eight member expedition and was one of three Irish climbers who reached the summit this morning.

He went missing on the descent and it is believed he may slipped on the way down.

Trinity College Dublin says it is offering any support it can to his family at this extremely distressing time, and is hopeful that he will be found safely as soon as possible.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it stands ready to provide consular assistance if requested.
