9 year-old Emily Hand has been freed after being held hostage for 50 days.

The second hostage exchange between Israel and Hamas went ahead late last night after an agonising delay for the families.

Israel allowed 39 Palestinians to leave two prisons as part of the truce deal, while 17 hostages from the Gaza Strip were freed by Hamas.

The Taoiseach, Tanaiste and President of Ireland Michael D Higgins have all welcomed the news.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says an innocent child who was lost has now been found and returned, and our country breathes a massive sigh of relief.

While Tanaiste Micheál Martin says he's delighted she's been released and reunited with her family.

He says the people of Ireland have been touched by Emily’s story, her innocence and the quiet dignity and determination of her father, Tom.

He's acknowledging the role played by the US, Qatar, Egypt and others that have been involved in securing the release of the hostages.

Her father Tom, who was originally from Dun Laoghaire in Dublin, was overcome with emotion as he finally got to embrace his little girl.

It is now day three of the four-day truce agreement, however there have been reports of a shooting by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank overnight.
