A medical specialist is pleading with the public to seek immediate treatment if they have an adverse reaction to cosmetic filler.

It comes as a group of Irish doctors call on the government to enforce stricter regulations in the area of aesthetic medicine in Ireland.

According to the British College of Aesthetic Medicine dermal filler can cause serious complications if not injected correctly.

Some complications including stroke, blindness and the death of body tissue.

Currently in Ireland, there are no regulations around the provision of dermal filler, surgical threading or chemical peels.

This means anyone can order supplies online and set up their own clinic.

Dr. Patrick Treacy is an advisor to the Irish branch of the British College of Aesthetic Medicine.

He says many of the qualifications technicians travel abroad for, do not give enough training to keep patients safe:

"We now have hairdressers, people who were nail varnish technicians one day and suddenly they're coming back with these qualifications, saying they're level 7, whatever that means, putting them up on their wall and not only injecting derma fillers and causing problems but injecting Botox, vitamin B and fat injections. It is totally out of control in Ireland"
