The Deputy Chief Medical Officer says he is hopeful people will be able to go on staycations this summer.
This weekend marks a year since the first case of Covid-19 was confirmed in the Republic.
There's been a further improvement in the hospital figures today, with 550 patients being treated and 135 of those are in ICU.
Dr Ronan Glynn says we are in a much better place than this time last year but that we need to continue to supress the virus.
He says it will be important to keep things "under control" in the next few weeks in particular.
It comes after Education Minister Norma Foley urged the Irish people to be careful ahead of the re-opening of schools.
Over 300,000 pupils in the first four years of primary school, along with Leaving Cert students, will return to class on Monday.
The other years are due to return on March 15th and April 1st.
