A major garda operation is underway across the country to ensure people follow Covid-19 restrictions this St Patrick's Day.

More than 2,500 gardai will be on duty nationwide to prevent large gatherings, non essential travel and house parties.

Public order units have been deployed to various parts of Dublin, where anti-lockdown protests are expected.

An infectious diseases expert says any flouting of restrictions today could undo a lot of the hard work done so far.

It comes as a further 349 new cases of Covid-19 were reported yesterday, along with 18 deaths.

Professor Sam McConkey, from the Royal College of Surgeons, has warned against meeting up with people you don't live with.

Meanwhile, the final day of the St. Patrick's Festival gets underway today.

While Level 5 restrictions remain in place, people both at home and abroad can enjoy virtual tours, marching bands and pageantry.

Organisers of the festival announced this morning a new light display set to take place this evening.
