A new study has found there is no evidence that medicinal cannabis is an effective treatment for various mental health issues.
A major study says there is no evidence that medicinal cannabis is effective at treating mental health issues.
The findings, which have been published in the Lancet journal, show its use cannot be justified for people with anxiety, depression or psychosis.
The review of trials carried out over 40 years suggests that the risks outweigh the benefits.
Ray Walley, who is a GP based in North Dublin, says there are question marks about the safety of medicinal cannabis:
"When you've got a medicine that comes to the market, it has to prove effectiveness before it gets a licence, it has to prove safety before it gets a licence and that is not what is happening in regard to cannabis and cannabinoids. It is being treated like a food [but] it should be treated like a medicine, to ensure patient safety, which is foremost, and to ensure it does what it says on the tin."
