Thousands were killed in wildfires over the last two years.
The recent inquiry has warned the whole species in the New South Wales area could be extinct by 2050 unless urgent action is taken to protect their habitat.
In June, the government there unveiled a $193m fund to protect koalas over a five-year period, Sky reports.
But details of how the strategy will actually save the animals from extinction have not yet been revealed.
One group has started a petition, which is calling for the protection of 200 hectares of core koala habitat:
If you live in NSW please add your voice to our petition calling for the protection of 200 hectares of core koala habitat that is critical to the survival of Port Macquarie’s koala population: https://t.co/ENyTGEwtme pic.twitter.com/9EmYc0fzxC
