A HSE report showed the figures.
More than 46,000 children in Ireland contracted Covid-19 between the start of the pandemic in March 2020 and last month.
That's according to a HSE report, which found children made up 17 percent of all cases reported.
4 per cent of the total number of children in Ireland aged up to 18 got the virus.
The report claims, across the full academic year just 18 schools were asked to exclude ALL staff and students while testing was carried out.
It says where outbreaks were recorded they were usually small-scale with 2-3 subsequent cases within friendship groups.
The report says 39 cases were identified among Leaving Certificate students.
21 of those were forced to miss exams to complete their isolation period.
While 14 students missed exams due to being a close contact.
It comes a week before students will start returning to the classroom for the new academic year.
Meanwhile, the first batch of carbon dioxide monitors are to start arriving at schools across the country from today.
They'll be used to help track air quality in classrooms and will indicate when better ventilation is needed.
Up to 20 monitors will be given to each primary school, with secondary schools receiving between 20 and 35.
