A five-year-old girl and woman in her thirties are in a serious condition in hospital following an attack at Parnell Square East in Dublin this afternoon.

A five-year-old boy and six-year-old girl who sustained "less serious injuries" were taken to CHI Crumlin for treatment, but the boy has since been discharged.

A man in his fifties is being treated for serious injuries in a Dublin hospital.

Gardaí have described it as a standalone attack, and do not believe the incident is terror related.

They are appealing to any witnesses or anyone with mobile phone footage of the incident to contact them.

Garda Press Officer Liam Geraghty has also praised passers-by who it's understood tried to help:

"My understanding is members of the public did intervene at a very, very early stage and we would applaud those members of the public for getting involved in such a traumatic and potentially dangerous situation."

Justice Minister Helen McEntee has expressed her "deep shock" at the attack.

She says her thoughts are with those injured, especially the children and their families.

Meanwhile, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said he was also "shocked" by the incident, and has paid tribute to emergency services who were on the scene "within minutes."
