A National Day of Hospital Protests will take place across the country today over the crisis in EDs.

Protestors marching against hospital overcrowding say 'lives are on the line'.

Hundreds of people are taking to the streets at 18 hospitals around the country today to demand an end to the trolley crisis.

The action began at 11am this morning - with a rally at University Hospital Limerick.

The rest will kick off at 1 o'clock this afternoon outside 17 other hospitals in anger over the damage being done to the health service.

The Save Navan Hospital Campaign's Chairperson Peadar Tóibín says more capacity's needed in Emergency Departments:

"I think what we're seeing today is unprecedented. 18 hospital communities from Cork to Donegal are turning out in protest, to show the government without a shadow of a doubt that we need to make sure we have the proper capacity in the system when we need it.

"And that's the key issue, there's no longer enough capacity for in the population in the state.
