The Health Minister says providing accommodation for healthcare workers on or near hospital grounds is being actively considered.

Stephen Donnelly says discussions are underway between his department, and the HSE, about where they might invest.

INMO members unanimously passed a motion at its annual conference this afternoon, which called on the Government to fund purpose-built onsite accommodation.

Minister Donnelly says options for hospitals worst-affected by accommodation shortages are being considered:

"One of the things I think we can look at in healthcare, is bespoke accommodation or local accommodation for individual hospitals. We used to do this in the past."

"Many hospitals used to have accommodation for nurses for example."

It's something that got phased out but it's something we can look at. Particularly with foreign healthcare professionals coming here, so they've got somewhere to establish from."
