A new Aer Lingus route will boost inbound tourism to the west of the country.

It's started a new daily service connecting Ireland West Airport in Knock to London Heathrow in Britain.

It'll provide onward flight connections to over 80 destinations worldwide including North America.

If you're heading on your holidays from the west of Ireland, this new route opens up a slew of new possible destinations by flying through one of the world's most connected airports.

Ireland West Airport Managing Director Joe Gilmore says it's a welcome development:

"It's very good news for the business and leisure travelers here in the west and north west of Ireland. It's a daily Heathrow service and it started yesterday."

"It's a daily, all year round service, into a major international hub".
