TDs and MEPs are now calling on suppliers to 'halt the hikes' and give struggling families a break
It's claimed energy providers are racking up profits, while their customers are racking up debts.
A study carried out for the Irish Daily Mail claims households have been crippled with 58 energy price hikes in the past 18 months.
While the companies raising the prices are posting millions in profits.
TDs and MEPs are now calling on suppliers to 'halt the hikes' and give struggling families a break.
Fianna Fail MEP for Ireland South, Billy Kelleher, says it's not appropriate for companies to gouge profits from society in such extraordinary times:
"Certainly, we can't have a situation where publically owned companies and privately owned companies are profiting excessively off the backs of ordinary people during this extraordinary crisis in terms of energy.
So we do need them to step up to the plate and reduce their profit-taking margins and pass it on to their hard-pressed consumers at the moment."
