Gardai have appealed to the public to stop sharing images of a public order incident which resulted in the death of a man on a stag weekend in Athlone.

They say it's upsetting to his family and unhelpful to their investigation.

47-year-old Paul 'Babs' Connolly died after an assault near a taxi rank on Church Street in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A post-mortem has been completed into his death but gardai say details are not being released for 'operational reasons'.

Two men continue to be questioned about the incident and an investigation is ongoing.

Councillor Robert McDermott from Mr Connolly's home town of Edenderry says friends and neighbours were stunned by news of his death.

McDermott commented on the reaction of the town: "People are very shocked in the town and they're trying to come to terms with how a night and a weekend started with a funeral night. People are just so shocked at how this could happen."
