An Garda Síochána made the decision following the terror attacks in New Zealand.

Community Gardaí are attending Friday prayers in mosques around the country today.

The An Garda Síochána Twitter account tweeted to say officers would be "making themselves available" to "provide support to the Muslim community in Ireland after the terrible events in New Zealand".

49 people have been shot dead at two mosques in Christchurch in what authorities are calling a "pre-planned terror attack".

A gunman opened fire on worshippers and posted footage of the attack online.

Shaykh Dr Umar Al-Qadri, Head Imam of the Islamic Centre of Ireland, took to Twitter to say "Muslims are deeply concerned and anxious about growing levels of Islamophobia across the world."
