Gardai are calling on road users not to take a chance behind the wheel if they're intoxicated as Easter weekend gets underway.
11 people have died on the roads during Easter Bank Holiday weekends since 2018.
The Garda safety appeal for this weekend says the most dangerous time for driving under the influence is between 9pm and 3am.
Together with our partners in @RSAIreland we're asking all road users to stay safe on the roads this weekend especially.
Slow down ✔️
Wear a seatbelt ✔️
Don't drive on alcohol or drugs ✔️
Consider fatigue ✔️
Watch out for cyclists, pedestrians, horse riders and motorcyclists ✔️— An Garda Síochána (@GardaTraffic) April 6, 2023
Roads Policing Chief Superintendent Jane Humphries says prescription drugs with side effects are also a risk:
"Intoxication covers both drink and drugs, and drugs covers both illegal and prescribed drugs. Our detections our increasing; that's thanks to the work of Roads Policing. My message is do not take the chance. You will be caught."
