Gardaí have been given the go ahead to purchase bodycams after a Cabinet decision this morning.
However, access to facial recognition technology has been delayed.
Justice Minister Helen McEntee arrived to a press conference at Government Buildings as peals of thunder rolled overhead to announce a major change in how the Gardaí use technology.
The tendering process for bodycams will now start but there has been a delay to access to facial recognition technology.
Following protests by the Green Party facial recognition will be separated into a new bill to come before the Oireachtas by Christmas.
Minister McEntee says significant safeguards will be put in place to prevent misuse of the technology.
Facial recognition is something which has been sought by the Garda commissioner as a tool to combat crime in a digital world.
