There's a call on Government to scrap plans to increase excise on fuel next week.

Aontú Leader Peadar Tóibín says the state's jacking up the price of petrol and diesel for the second time in just a few months.

He's describing it as an attack on drivers and commuters who face the highest electricity prices in Europe.

Deputy Tóibín claims it's a Government tactic to hike fuel costs for people:

"671,000 people are in poverty in this country. A million people are barely scraping by at the moment."

"And what we have is rich ministers literally making it more difficult for struggling families, and this is not happening by accident."

"This is a deliberate attack, I believe, on drivers and commuters, many of whom don't have an alternative mode of transport."
