It is hoped that the legislation will ease the burden on workers
A bill is being passed through the Dail that will allow parents with children under 12 to request a number of flexible working options.
It will also give workers the right to take a case to the Workplace Relations Commission if their employer ignores their request.
Employers will be required to respond to a request within four weeks.
Caroline Reidy from the HR Suite says the legislation will ease the burden on workers.
"I think this is something that is going to be really welcomed across the board for a lot of people, because of the restrictions of not getting flexible working for those who have caring responsibilities, or parents of sick children.
"It may have meant that they would've been out of the workforce completely for that period of time."
