Some motorists were well outside the limits yesterday

Gardaí detected 994 vehicles speeding during a nationwide operation yesterday.

National Slow Down Day began at 7am yesterday.

It ran for 24 hours with over 150,000 checks done in total.

One driver in Co. Donegal was clocked at 122kms per hour in a 50 zone.

While another motorist was travelling at 183 in a 120 zone on the M1 at Dunmahon in Dundalk.

Chief Superintendent Ray McMahon of Roads Policing Bureau said, the results of the campaign were concerning.

"Despite advanced warning and our widely circulated appeals to slow down, a significant number of motorists still failed to drive safely within the applicable speed limit," he said.

He also thanked the majority of people who do stick within the speed limits.

He added that, "this appeal to slow down is not only for one day, but for every day."
