The incident happened early Saturday morning
A man in his 60's has died after an alleged assault in Westport, Co. Mayo in the early hours of Saturday morning.
He has been named locally as Peter McDermott, a married father of one.
It happened at around 1.20am, on High Street in Westport.
Mr McDermott had been taken to Mayo University Hospital where he was receiving treatment.
The State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem will now take place in due course and a family liaison officer has been appointed.
Earlier today, a man in his 20's who was arrested as part of this investigation was released from custody.
Gardaí say a file will be prepared for the DPP and investigations are ongoing.
