The government is facing renewed calls to urgently address the shortage of electric vehicle charging points in rural Ireland.

More electric vehicles were sold in the first three months of this year, than diesel.

However, independent TD for Galway-East, Seán Canney, says people in rural areas have no choice but to continue using petrol and diesel because of the lack of charging infrastructure.

He wants charging points to be installed in key locations:

"We should be providing supports for jobs and for community groups to put public charging points in.

"The local authorities should be given the funding to make sure that all of their car parks have charging points at the ready."
