The legislation has now gone to the European Commission for review
New regulations around e-scooters will see:
- a speed limit of 20 kilometers-per-hour
- a requirement for lights
- and an age limit of 16
The changes will take effect once a European Commission review has concluded.
Junior Transport Minister Jack Chambers says, those who don't comply with new electric scooter regulations, will be issued with a fixed charge notice.
Several people have died or have been seriously injured this year in e-scooter related incident.
Minister Chamber states, "We know from the data so far this year, we've had 48 people seriously injured on e-scooters and unfortunately three people have died."
He continues, "But there is a definite road safety risk, we've had 3% usage in the behavioral studies in our engagement with the public through the road safety authority and the projected usage is about 12%."
