Plans to allow children as young as 16 drive cars in the EU would see cars fitted with speed-limiting devices.
However the measures have been met with criticism from road safety groups.
The plans are aimed at addressing mobility issues in remote areas of the bloc.
Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae believes it's a good idea:
"It would be good for rural Ireland, it'd be good for young people. It'd be good for their minds - from a social aspect, for helping their parents and grandparents."
"I could see an awful lot of benefits to it and I really would like to see it being introduced here."
