Fine Gael is bringing a new bill to the Seanad next week, to make spiking a stand alone offence.
The Justice Minister Simon Harris is putting forward the legislation to Cabinet.
Dublin Rape Crisis Centre is welcoming the proposal and says it will remind people spiking someone's drink is poisoning them.
Chief Executive of Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, Noeline Blackwell says the longer sentence is needed, to reflect the harm caused:
"The impact of drink spiking, where it leads to harm to someone else is a much serious offence. So, that level of offence needs to be increased."
