Donald Trump has been indicted on criminal charges by a grand jury in New York.
He is the first ever former US President to face criminal charges in court.
He allegedly made a hush money payment to the adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
The former US President says his indictment is "political persecution".
Guardian reporter in Washington David Smith says jail time is possible 'in theory' but unlikely.
'In theory he could go to prison which would obviously be sensational for a former US President, most legal experts think a charge of this kind would not lead to a prison sentence especially with the context of it being Trump, maybe some sort of conviction maybe some sort of fine but it would not prevent him for running for election- obviously it would have political consequences.'
