The number of dogs put down in Irish pounds more than doubled last year compared to 2021.

That’s according to Dog Control statistics released by the Government today.

Animal charity Dogs Trust says it’s 'extremely concerned' over the figures, especially euthanised and stray animals.

Communications Manager, Corina Fitzsimons, says this is a hangover from lockdowns:

"Unfortunately many people are struggling with returning to work. They may be in the office more often than they were told."

"There is a rental crisis, a housing crisis, a cost of living crisis, so unfortunately there's so many reasons at the moment the people are struggling with their dogs."

"So we would appeal to those people to please please seek help, espeically if an issue starts off, to try and nip it in the bud and not to let things escalate, we want to keep as many dogs happy in their existing homes as possible."
