Urgent appeal from ISPCA as Ireland swamped with unwanted dogs

The ISPCA has launched an emergency appeal for support because it says Ireland is swamped with unwanted dogs.

Charity inspectors have taken in almost 700 dogs in the first quarter of 2023 alone.

It says the four shelters in Wicklow, Donegal, Longford and Mallow have reached full capacity - and it's renting space elsewhere.

Denise McCauseland, the ISPCA's National Head of Animal Welfare, explains how people can help:

"It's a snowball effect and what we're looking to try and do is to maybe highlight what's going on, get it out there, see if people would be willing to help us out, to give us a small donation towards our work."

"Also to highlight the fact there are dogs, a lot of wonderful dogs and rescues and all of our rescues in our centres are looking for homes."
