Dogs will be banned from Galway beaches if new council bye-laws are adopted.

Sport on the beach was also included in earlier versions of the proposal - however it's since been dropped.

Horses and dogs are banned from many blue flag beaches during the summer across the country.

Green Party councilor in Connemara is Alastair McKinstry - he outlines who would enforce the new rules:

"We do have community wardens and we do have the members of the Gardai, those in the first instance.

"Beach by-laws include other things such as camper-van parking which has been a problem recently, the Gardai may have the authority to intervene.

"It's been nearly over 20 years since we updated the by-laws, they hadn't things such as camper-vans, dog walking or horses."
