People are FaceTiming friends and watching sport while driving, but are not being prosecuted due to current traffic laws.
Assistant Garda Commissioner Paula Hilman says the current offence relating to mobile phones, is holding one while driving.
However there's no offence relating to 'distracted driving'.
Commissioner Hilman told a meeting with the Policing Authority in Drogheda yesterday it's something Gardaí have raised with officials:
"The offence is holding a mobile phone."
"What we're seeing now is people watching, having FaceTime messages and calls, people watching sport and there's no offence of 'distracted driving' so it is something that we've raised and and certainly at our partnership meetings we have raised that because the offense is for holding a mobile phone."
