A young mother who died while trying to save her son from drowning on a Co. Cork beach has been described as being "devoted to her family".
The tragedy happened at Ballycroneen Beach in Cloyne shortly before 1pm yesterday when the young boy got into difficulty.
His mother jumped into the water and managed to push the boy towards nearby rocks where he was picked up by a rescue helicopter.
However she was swept out into deeper water and efforts to revive her failed.
Southern Correspondent with the Irish Independent, Ralph Riegel, says the area is known for strong currents:
"It's essentially a woman giving her life for her child and no greater love is there."
"It's in east Cork. It's the strand that's closest to the entrance to Cork harbour, and while it is quite and idyllic strand, locals would be very wary of swimming there because it is known for very very strong tidal movements and also for rip currents."
