Concerns have been raised over the low level of uptake for the rent tax credit for 2023.

New figures released by the Department of Housing show 40 thousand 631 people have claimed the 500 euro rent tax credit to date this year.

That's just over a 10th of those registered with the RTB.

Last year, over 238 thousand renters in total have claimed the 500 euro credit.

Senator Mary Fitzpatrick, Fianna Fail’s Spokesperson on Housing, says the low uptake is disappointing:

"Those figures are up until the end of June or the start of July. Last year more than half of all registered renters claimed their tax credit. We'd like to see all renters avail of the 500 euro tax credit and we really would encourage renters to apply. It's their money, it's their taxes they're claiming back."
