The first of this years CAO offers will be made later this afternoon.

They'll be available from 2 o'clock, with the deadline for students to accept their college offer set at 3 o'clock next Wednesday afternoon.

Grade inflation in the Leaving Cert is expected to impact the process again this year.

The number of places on certain courses, including nursing, have already been increased this year.

But the Irish Times' Education Editor, Carl O'Brien, says competition for college places is expected to remain tight this year.

This means Leaving Cert grade inflation is likely to lead to the return of a lottery process for some courses:

"That's because we've seen so many high grades and it makes it harder for universities to differentiate between those top candidates. So, we had that in 50 courses last year.

He continued, "I think we'll likely see a return of that, maybe not to the same extent but it will certainly be a factor for 2023."
