It would see such services rolled out in schools for the first time
Plans to provide free counselling services to primary school children are set to be agreed by Cabinet.
A pilot scheme costs 5 million euro and would be rolled out across seven counties.
It would see officials help schools establish a panel of counsellors and identify students who would benefit the most.
The counties in which the programme would be rolled out is set to be revealed later this week.
The programme is designed to help students who were impacted by the pandemic, and address mental health concerns.
Officials would help schools establish a panel of counsellors, as well as identifying students who would benefit the most.
Clinical psychotherapist Stephanie Regan says this is a welcome move:
"It's all about early intervention, having something there for children, having someone there that can deal with the issues at the earliest point.
"This idea of being on site and having a wellbeing practitioner within the school is going to be a huge benefit to children, to parents and I think also to teachers."
