67-year-old Brendan Kilduff was killed at Aghamore near Ballyhaunis on Tuesday night.
A man in his 80s who was arrested in connection with the shooting and has been released without charge and a file will be sent to the DPP.
Gardai believe the man mistook Mr. Kilduff for an intruder.
According to the Belfast Telegraph, a moment of tragic confusion resulted in his death.
The paper reports that after visiting the elderly farmer at his home, Mr Kilduff was unable to start his car.
He was then fatally shot as he attempted to return to the farmer's house.
