Protesters have been banned from interfering with the first development to provide asylum seekers with accommodation in Co Leitrim.

According to the Irish Examiner, the court heard there had been an attempt to burn down a Tesco store attached to the 25-apartment building at Rock Centre in Ballinamore.

A seven foot fence was also erected around the building site to prevent workers getting in and security personnel and workers have also been subject to threats and intimidation.

Once the development is completed, asylum seekers will have their "own door" style accommodation with a supermarket, a GP surgery and mental health facilities.

In statement released today the Ballinamore Community Group have said they have agreed to stand down their silent and peaceful demonstration with immediate effect.

It's after they were given a "firm commitment" that the Government would do nothing further in Ballinamore until further negotiations take place with the group's spokespeople.
