'Time-over-distance' speed cameras are to be rolled out across the entire country, according to Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
The cameras monitor vehicles at two points which are a set distance apart, and calculate the average speed the car has travelled between them.
Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae doesn't agree with the plan:
"We should be cutting all of the hedges on the sides of our main roads [first]... we shouldn't have water ponding on our roads and these are the basic road maintenance issues that are not being dealt with and we should be tackling those along with making sure people drive safely", he said.
The cameras are already in operation on the M7 at Birdhill in Tipperary and in the Port Tunnel in Dublin.
The CEO of Transport Infrastructure Ireland told the Oireachtas Transport Committee earlier this week that there are plans to introduce more.
