Almost half of people say there are taxi shortages in their area, with 4 in 10 reporting concerns about getting home safely.

That's according to a survey from YouGov that was commissioned by Uber in the first two weeks of January.

It comes as the Taxis for Ireland Coalition meets with politicians today, calling for changes to the system to bring more drivers on board.

Fine Gael senator Tim Lombard says allowing Uber-style taxis to operate and simplifying the test should be considered:

"I think from my point of view and from the feedback, and it's not just a Christmas issue the feedback. Commerce is being affected by the lack of availability of taxis and a lack of a safe option of getting home."

Meanwhile, yesterday it was revealed that taxis received their highest amount of complaints from customers last year.

Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick had the highest amount of complaints.

Majority of complaints came from taxi drivers not accepting card payments which is a legal requirement.

Other complaints included over-charging and smoking while driving.
