A rabbit has become wellness officer in a California Police Department

A rabbit has joined a police force in California as its "wellness officer."

The bunny roams around the office freely, has his own pen equipped with toys, a toy tunnel and a litter box.

Yuba City Police Department say Percy, or Officer Hops as he's known to his colleagues, is part of the station's efforts to step up mental wellness efforts.

It announced its newest recruit on Facebook on Wednesday.

The wellness programme is set up for employees and their families to helps prioritise mental and physical wellbeing.

Percy's discovery

According to Yuba City Police Department, Percy the rabbit was found by an officer in the middle of Percy Avenue.

To ensure the rabbit's safety, the officer took him to animal control but he was not claimed.

The Police Services Analyst chose to adopt him once he was available.

She decided to name the rabbit “Percy”, from where he was found.
