The potential release of 50 Israeli women and children, who've been held hostage in Gaza since October 7th, has been delayed for at least 24 hours.

The Secretary-General António Guterres (third from left) meets with family members of hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza.

A four-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was expected to get underway this morning.

As part of the agreement, the militant group has asked for 150 Palestinian prisoners to be freed.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says it's still not known if Irish/Israeli girl Emily Hand will be one of those to be let go.

He says there's also talk the proposed four day ceasefire could be extended.

'I can't imagine what a traumatic experience that is, being held captive in a tunnel, away from your family, so hopefully she's out in the next few days.  Maybe I'm a foolish optimist but if there can be a ceasefire for four days maybe there can be a ceasefire for a longer period.  I think it could be extended if more hostages are released.'
