196 people were arrested for driving under the influence of drink and drugs over St. Patrick's weekend.
A Garda operation was in place from last Thursday morning to Tuesday of this week with Gardaí carrying out 678 checkpoints.
196 people were arrested for driving under the influence - 136 for drink and 60 for drugs.
Over 1800 drivers were detected speeding, with one driver doing 111 in a 60 zone in Trim, Co. Meath.
Roads Policing Units in Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal conducting checkpoints yesterday across the Region as part of a day-of-action targeting the 4 key lifesaver offences:

Fixed Charge Offences for other road offences during this period included: 152 for use of mobile phones, 99 for learner drivers driving unaccompanied and 55 for not wearing a seatbelt.
12 serious collisions took place that resulted in 17 serious and life-threatening injuries.
Gardaí have reiterated their call to never drink and drive, and to slow down.
